We had a fantastic day of learning at St. Matthews Lutheran Church in Kitchener. After our regularly scheduled morning service and Coffee Hour, we enjoyed getting to know one another over a delicious homemade soup lunch prepared by John.
Seventeen participants participated in a walking simulation that explored the root causes of the overincarceration of Indigenous women. The simulation was based on in-depth research, statistics, and real-life quotes and stories from local Indigenous partners. It was facilitated by Fiona Li from the Mennonite Central Committee and Lana Moses from Feather & Cross. Participants engaged in scenario-based choices, learning that certain systems need to be dismantled in order for real change to occur. Understanding the “why” behind the statistics is just the first step toward making meaningful changes. As we gather more information, we can collectively begin to influence policy changes and create better support networks.
The exercise concluded with a sharing circle where resources and ideas were discussed in a non-judgmental atmosphere. Ideas for instilling hope included volunteering at the Grand Valley Institute (GVI), supporting Indigenous friends in school, and learning about healing lodges.
